Brewing news South Africa: South African Breweries (SAB) Limited extended sponsorship agreement with COSAFA for five years

South African Breweries (SAB) Limited, sponsors of the continent’s finest regional football showcase—the Castle Cup, have extended their sponsorship agreement with the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) for five years starting next year, the Nation Online released August 25.

Cosafa general secretary Ashford Mamelodi confirmed the development which will cause a buzz of excitement among the member associations who were uncertain about the future of the regional soccer fiesta.

“It is true we have extended the sponsorship agreement for the Cosafa Castle Cup until 2011. The competition is in its 10th edition and the new deal will take to a total of 15 years and we have every reason to smile.

“We can proudly shout from the rooftops that the tournament has become the biggest regional football competition in the world,” said Mamelodi.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM), which is one of the 13 member associations, described the announcement as cause for a big sigh of relief especially coming from a background where the future looked very uncertain.

“Not long ago there were fears that SAB would pull out sponsorship because it was deemed to be costly, it was an area of concern.

“It therefore comes as a huge sigh of relief to learn that SAB has extended the contract. Unlike other tournaments like the African Nations Cup, it is fully funded whereby associations do not bear the costs like air travel and allowances,” said Nyamilandu.

He further said as for Malawi, the regional showpiece has helped expose talent. “A number of our players who play in foreign leagues were spotted through this tournament and it has also helped improve the level of our performance. One of the countries that has benefitted from participating in the Castle Cup is Angola who qualified for the World Cup finals held this year,” said Nyamilandu.
